The printing presses we used in class dated back to 1840! The tutor said how they were probably once bright gold or red colours but were painted black upon the death of Prince Albert. Of course I marvelled at the machinery and took sly phone camera photos. The presses were heavy duty beasts - the day after the class, not only did my arms ache but my legs were like lead to pull along! It felt good to be doing manual printing work, though - the motion, feeling full force of your labours, and the simplicity yet the superb effects of this artform. |
